Pope Francis’ suggested New Year’s resolutions

(CNS/Paul Haring)

(CNS/Paul Haring)

VATICAN CITY — When Pope Francis met before Christmas with Vatican employees, mostly lay people with families, he asked them to do 10 things. The list sounded remarkably like suggestions for New Year’s resolutions:

— “Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are.”

— “Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love.”

— “Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy.”

— “Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence.”

— “Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others.”

— “Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord.”

— “Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people.”

— “Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation.”

— “Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker … the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this.”

UPDATE because we initially didn’t include No. 10:

— Making sure your Christmas is about Jesus and not about shopping.

  2. Stuart McGregor says:

Words of a father.Thank you Papa.

  3. I agree with all of this, but the only way we can achieve this is following the teachings of Jesus Christ…”LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU” AND THE WAY WE GET TO DO THIS, IS BY STARTING THE CHAIN OF LOVE…WHICH IS SIMPLY SENDING LOVE THOUGH OUR SPIRIT, WITH OUT SPEAKING.
SENDING LOVE..TO EVERYONE THAT WE KNOW, STARTING WITH OUR OWN FAMILY AND FRIENDS, TO THOSE THAT ARE SICK, THOSE THAT WE HAVE HATED ( HATRED IS :CRITISIZING, THINKING WE ARE BETTER THAN OTHER, IN OTHER WORDS WHATEVER IS NOT LOVING FROM THE HEART,,IS HATRED!
YOU CAN SEND LOVE IN THE MORNING AND EVENING AND OF COURSE THOUGHT THE DAY TO PEOPLE WE MEET OR SEE IN THE STREETS, BUS…ETC.IF YOU DOING IT CONCIOUSLY, YOU WILL NOTICE A CHANGE IN OURSELVES IN A VERY SHORT TIME, AND IN OTHERS..THERE IS A WEBSITE YOU CAN GO TO:
“CADENA DEL AMOR…OR “CHAIN OF LOVE”
THE POSITIVE CHANGE YOU WILL SEE AND FEEL FIRST IS IN YOURSELF…TRY AND DO IT AT 8 AM AND AT 9:30PM EVERY DAY AND TO EVERYONE YOU WORK WITH AND ALSO THE ONES YOU MEET IN THE STREET..AND REMEMBER THIS IS DONE IN THE SILENCE OF YOUR HEART AND THIS ACTION WILL BE A HIGH SPRIRITUAL CONNECTION WITH OTHERS.JUST BY SEEING HOW THE WORLD IS CHANGING FOR THE WORST EVERY DAY WE ALL SHOULD BE MOTIVATED TO START CHANGING NOT ONLY US BUT OTHERS AS WELL…ALSO TALK TO YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS SO THEY CAN START AS WELL…LOVE IS THE ONLY POSSITIVE ACTION THAT WILL SAVE THE HUMAN RACE!!

Simple but hard to do sometimes. It takes a real loving heart to do all these but with God’s help, these are doable. May the Spirit of God touch our lives that we may do all these or at least try! So much will be gained if we do. May I add: pray for those who hurt & persecute you that they will be enlightened. I wonder what Jesus and his father would send to us on this year of our Lord 2015…I can only imagine…Bless you!…Ties esp to St Augustine for the healing of the recent post and bless all those who need healing or need at this time…for as I have received many miracles it is only to do the right thing and pass some of that forward to other’s in need as we are allowed to have this new year…In Thanksgiving to and for you and yours!

Thank you Holy Father you are a breath of fresh air in the church today! Your practical comments fit totally in a world that keeps missing the point in both the clergy lay people. We need to follow those who are genuine followers of Christ and not those who are ‘wolves in sheep’s clothing’. and there are a lot of these… I believe we need the intervention of the Holy Spirit for the wisdom to know the shepherd to follow…

  88. It is time for ALL houses of worship of ALL religions to start having hearing access for people with hearing loss. This does not mean the cheapest but installing the access that will actually be used that has no stigma a/k/a not requiring people to wear stigmatizing devices.

To reach the full spectrum of people with hearing loss there should be induction loops and captioning at all services. Induction loops allow people with t-coils on hearing aids/cochlear implants to hear the speaker directly in the hearing aid/implant when the aid/implant is switched to the t-setting.

We hope that the Vatican will become a model of access for all houses of worship by installing induction loops. It is hard to ask a question when you cannot hear the answer. 🙂

  89. Jackie King says:

Pope Francis’s words are what we need to do to live in this world with more happiness and joy. He is a breath of fresh air. Too bad he decided to forgo challenging Pope Benedict for the papacy. We need him for a longer period of time. He will not need to go for sainthood. He is a saint right now.
And by the way, my new grandson was named Luke Francis. Luke after the patron saint Luke- father of physicians. Both his parents are physicians and Francis for Pope Francis.

Wow, I really need to work on these resolutions. I am having a hard time not to be resentful at work because they are hiring new workers at higher salaries then what I make at work, and I have been a loyal employee. 101. Pope Francis,
May we always show the humility and loving care for all around us on our planet that you speak of. You are truly the voice of our Lord speaking.

  102. Many say all religious and “holy Men” indulge in these activities, However the issue is that when these issues are highlighted, the local Archbishop’s house administration does nothing, and prefers to sweep the issue under the carpet.I say this for The Archdiocese of Bombay, India. can some one wake up.

  106. I love these suggestions so much. You are the best Pope Francis. I am a Maronite Catholic. Our Bishop Gregory Mansour is in Brooklyn NY. I live in Nashville Tn and go to St.Philips Catholic Church in Franklin TN. Priests are Father Bala fron India and Father Tran who is from Vietnam. I love the diversity.God bless you as I pray the Rosary and pray for you. Dear Father, my daughter is 53 and a single mom of 3. She has aggressive Stage IV cancer. Thank you so much Dear Pope Francis. Louise Stelma.

  107. Addressing the shopping issue at Christmas, Pope Francis is absolutely correct. In the USA no longer do Thanksgiving or Christmas have anything to do with giving thanks, goodwill to men, or family values. It’s all about hitting the malls, breaking up family gatherings so poor low paid workers are forced to work so that the stock holders and executives at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sears, etc., can get richer as people rush to the stores for the so-call “door busters.” Those who calm to firmly believe in the meaning of the Christmas season seem to be far and few between, as each year the holiday season becomes more about shopping and spending, than about Peace on Earth and Good will to men.

The administration of our catholic church world wide has reached its lowest. Greedy, arrogance, nepotism rule high. We look forward to you to made the changes.
