Prayer to Mary: Pope doesn’t leave Rome without it

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis entrusted his upcoming apostolic journey to the Holy Land to Our Lady when he visited a Marian icon at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome this morning.

He brought roses and prayed in silence before the icon for about 15 minutes, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi told us today.

The unannounced morning visit marks what has become a Pope Francis tradition: visiting the “Salus Populi Romani” (health of the Roman people)  to pray for Mary’s protection and care before a major trip.

He did the same thing before heading to Brazil last year when he prayed that Mary protect and care for everyone attending World Youth Day and for all young people around the world:

He also visited the day after his election, at the start of his new journey as supreme pontiff:

The icon has special significance for the pope and he has visited it often on different occasions to pray. He has said that the Basilica of St. Mary Major was the first Marian shrine in the West where the image of the Mother of God — the “Theotokos” — was venerated.

According to tradition, this image of Mary embracing Jesus as a young boy was the work of the evangelist St. Luke, who painted it on a tabletop made by Jesus himself in St. Joseph’s carpentry shop. Many centuries later, Jesuit missionaries distributed reproductions of the image to promote Marian devotion around the world.

    Påven besöker alltid basilikan Maria Maggiore i Rom inför varje resa och ber om Marias förbön.

    Yes, it is fitting that Pope Francis pray for the assistance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She continues to intercede on our behalf.

    May is the month of the Blessed Mother. We still have the unfulfilled request for the Consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart.

    Please read the locutions at http://www.locutions.org. These locutions are called private. However, read them with an open heart and mind, use your free will to decide.

    The Blessed Virgin Mary is also the Woman Clothed with the Sun.

    1 Timothy 2:5
    For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

    Exodus 20: 4
    Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

    6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep
    my commandments.

    Jeremiah 7
    Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.

    3 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

    4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these.
    Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.

    9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;

    10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

    11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord.

    12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

    13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;

    14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

    15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

    16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

    17 Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

    18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

    19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the Lord: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?

    20 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.

    21 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.

    22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

    23 But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

    24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

  4. Well, let’s always remember, that the Icon (of whatever) is nothing. Same as when we see a cross. Let’s thank for every single crucifix we see where so ever. It’s however not this subject, but the real person behind it. Be is God the Father, Jesus Christ, Holy Mary or a Saint who’s presence we adore when talking to them.

    So, many say, the Pope adores this or that picture, statue, shroud, vail or relic. That’s only in a way so. But no believer ever adores any subject, but the direct and almost tangible presence of the person behind it, which actually then is there – with the praying person.

    So, when such reports here or elswhere title: “Pope Francis visited the icon at the Basilica of St. Mary Major“ or in a very personal way meaning our common friend Brad; „MailCircle-Brad visited the Robe of Christ in Trier 2012“ – they did not visit these objects even in fact they did of course – they visited the person behind it. A pagan or atheist indeed visits solely the subject, whilst a Christian by visiting the subject, visits the person behind it, and takes this object as sort of a „media“ in this intimate meeting. Same as if we bring to a good friend’s meeting a common relic, such as what he left behind when we saw last. So, two people standing side by side on the same relic, artwork etc, got a ever so different meeting. The atheist with a thing, the Christian with the person behind it.

  5. elissa GRACE says:

    So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

    16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

    17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

    18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

    19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

    20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

    21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

    22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

    23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

    24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
    25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

    26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
    27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
    29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
    30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
    31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
    32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

    Jeremiah 23:16
    Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the teacher that teach unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.

    James 1:26
    If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

    Psalm 115
    11 Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: he is their help and their shield.

    Leviticus 19:4
    Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the Lord your God.

    Leviticus 26:1
    Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God.

    Isaiah 10:15
    Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.

    Deuteronomy 29:17
    And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them:)
    18 Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
    19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:
    20 The Lord will not spare him, but then the anger of the Lord and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven.

    2 Kings 23:5
    And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

    Chronicles 33
    ..he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.
    And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God

    Psalm 106
    And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

    Isaiah2
    8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:
    9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.
    10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty.
    11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

    1 Kings 19:18
    Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
