You may have heard that the new World Youth Day logo was released last night in Rio de Janiero, where the next big international youth festival will be held next year. Here’s a look at one version of the new logo:

And that prompted the social media desk at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to ask via Twitter what people think of it:
Some replies:
@USCCB @CatholicNewsSvc No; also disappointed & frustrated that the greatest historical, institutional art patron ran a crowdsourced contest

I think it’s a great logo — it says communicates Brazil, Jesus, Catholicism, and youth. It’ll work great on a lot of products. It’s easy to reproduce in different media. Excellent job.
Why do the American bishops waste money on nonsense surveys about a logo with which they have nothing to do? Their negligence and their abetting of criminal behavior has cost the Church $2.2 billion. Surely, resources could be better directed than paying someone to twitter meaningless questions.
I like the reference to the sacred heart and the inclusion of the letters JMJ.
I guess the happy colors and childish drawing is an unfortunate necessity.
I long for the day when we can use the Sacred Heart, or a more Icon-like image.
I guess it is like gregorian chant, something so beautiful and inspiring butsgets neglected by the marketing department as less likely to be attributed to the genius of the marketing department.
