Here are some other links to remembrances and tributes to Cardinal John P. Foley, who died yesterday at age 76.
- Basilian Father Thomas Rosica, head of Canada’s Salt + Light Catholic TV network, credits Cardinal Foley’s work in Rome with putting a human face on the work of the church. He also recounts with great and loving detail the final time many of us saw the cardinal — at the Catholic Media Convention last June in Pittsburgh. (For more insights into the late cardinal’s personality, you can also watch an in-depth interview Father Rosica did in 2008 with then-Archbishop Foley for Salt + Light.)
- Bishop Robert N. Lynch of St. Petersburg, Fla., a former general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, details how a young Father John Foley paved the road that led to the opening of U.S. bishops’ general meetings to media coverage and how, as an archbishop working at the Vatican, he never complained about the poor treatment he received from other members of the Roman Curia whose distrust of the media was legendary.
- Mike Flach, editor and general manager of the Arlington Catholic Herald in Virginia, recalls how as a young journalism graduate he wrote to then-Msgr. Foley looking for a job and how that led to a 30-year career in the Catholic press.
- Greg Erlandson, publisher at Our Sunday Visitor and current president of the Catholic Press Association, calls Cardinal Foley “a bright, witty, humble man” who encouraged the Catholic press around the world and spearheaded “an effort to make the values and teachings of the Catholic Church relevant in the burgeoning fields of public relations, advertising and digital media.”
Other remembrances of Cardinal Foley can be found on this tribute page on the website of The Catholic Standard & Times, where the cardinal worked as a reporter, assistant editor and editor before being called to Rome.
And read our story posted earlier today on what the pope and other current and former Vatican officials had to say about the passing of Cardinal Foley.
