A prayer service was held in the Church of St. Lawrence last night and another is planned for this evening.

The church is open for mourners to pay their respects until tomorrow afternoon when the casket will be taken from the church to Matteotti Square in the town of about 3,200 residents. Msgr. Luigi Ricci, vicar general of the Diocese of Rimini and pastor of St. Lawrence, said the funeral will begin at 4 p.m. After the Mass, mourners will walk, carrying the casket to the town’s cemetery.

Bishop Franceso Lambiasi of Rimini will preside at the Mass. Archbishop Giovanni Becciu, the Vatican’s substitute secretary of state, and Archbishop Giuseppe Bertello, nuncio to Italy, will be among the concelebrants.

  1. Archbishop Sambi was a great person. He had many beautiful human qualities. He used these gifts in his ministry as a Nuncio for the benefit of the Church. May the angels take him to paradise.
