Catholics now have a study guide specifically developed to help them address the genocide occurring in the Darfur region in western Sudan.
The Catholic Companion and Discussion Guide was written to be used alongside the best-selling “Not on Our Watch Christian Companion: Biblical Reflections on the Movement to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond,” published by the Enough Project, a program of the Center for American Progress.
The Catholic guide was developed in partnership with the Center of Concern’s Education for Justice Project and Darfur Christian Action Campaign.
Authors include Jane Deren, a theology teacher at Georgetown Visitation High School in Washington who is also director emeritus and senior adviser to the Education for Justice Project, and Sister Katherine Feely, a Sister of Notre Dame who runs the project today. Contributors include Xaverian Brother William Griffin, senior project associate at the center, Liz Leipold, center intern, and Cory Smith, formerly faith outreach adviser for Enough Project.
The 47-page guide can be downloaded for use by parish and school groups and others interested in human rights in Africa. It includes prayers, Scripture verses, reflections and explanations of the situation in Darfur as well as suggestions on ways for Catholics to act to end the genocide in light of the church’s social teachings.
