Yesterday, I brought my trusty point-and-shoot film camera to church. I was sitting on a folding chair behind the last pew at St. Joseph’s with a gaggle of antsy New Yawk print media. For hours. But I managed to get the aisle seat. Politely.
As the Holy Father came down the aisle after the ecumenical service, I saw him through my viewfinder. Very close up. He looked in my direction and I let the camera drop on its tether when I saw him extend his hand.
Catholic journalist’s dilemma: get the close-up, unobstructed shot of the pope looking directly at me? Or shake his proffered hand?
I shook his hand, of course, like a polite New Yorker, but I sure hope that photo comes out!
